WHY DO WE STAND WHEN WE SING?


II Chronicles 20:19: “And the Levites, of the Children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high.” Psalms 135:2-3: “Ye that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God, Praise the Lord; for the Lord is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.”


WHY DO WE CLAP OUR HANDS?

Psalms 47:1: “O clap your hands, all ye people: shout unto God with the voice of triumph.”


WHY DO WE LIFT OUR HANDS?

Psalms 134:2: “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.” Psalms 63:4: “Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.” I Timothy 2:8: “I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.”

WHY DO WE BOW DOWN AND KNEEL?

Psalms 103:1: “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name.” Psalms 34:1: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Psalms 100:1: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” Revelation 19:1 & 6: vs. 1“And after these things, I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleuia; Salvation and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:” vs. 6 “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”


WHY DO WE SING IN TONGUES AND IN ENGLISH?

I Corinthians 14:14-15: “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the Spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: will sing with the Spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”


WHY DO WE HAVE THIS TYPE OF WORSHIP?

John 4:24: “God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23, 24: “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” Philippians 3:3: “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh.”


WHY DO WE SING CHORUSES AS WELL AS HYMNS?

Ephesians 5:18-19: “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”


WHAT IS PROPHECY?

I Corinthians 12:7 & 10: vs. 7 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” vs.10 “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.” I Corinthians 14:3: “But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.” Amos 3:8: “…the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy?”


WHY DO WE HAVE SPEAKING IN TONGUES AND INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES?

I Corinthians 12:7-10: vs. 7 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” vs. 8 “For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.”
vs. 9 “To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit.” vs.10 “To another the working of miracles; to another prophesy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.”
I Corinthians 14:5, 27 & 39: vs. 5 “I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speak with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.”
vs. 27 “If a man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.” vs. 39 “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.”
Acts 2:1-4: “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
I Corinthians 14:39: “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.”

WHY ARE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS PART OF THE WORSHIP SERVICE?

Psalms 150:16: “Praise ye the Lord, Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of this power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord, Praise ye the Lord.”

Psalms 150:3-5: “Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise Him with the stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.”
Revelation 14:2: “And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps.”


WHY DOES THE WHOLE CHURCH PRAY AT ONCE FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS?

Acts 4:24: “And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou are God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:”


WHY DO WE ANOINT WITH OIL AND PRAY FOR THE SICK?

James 5:14-15: “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”


SOME SCRIPTURAL TERMINOLOGY:

“THE ANOINTING” The Presence and the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. “TO MINISTER” To serve or help another by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. “…but our sufficiency is of God; who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament…” (II Corinthians 3:5 & 6) “THE GLORY” The manifestation of God’s presence and splendor to the spiritual and physical faculties of man. “And it came to pass…that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister…for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.” (I Kings 8:10 & 11) “REVELATION” The manifestation of God’s will and truths to man. “Wherefore I also…making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him…” (Ephesians 1:15-17)
